For Kiki

For our little friend Kiki, who died on Tuesday. She was “just a bird” but she was our pet, and will be sadly missed in our home.

Your little body was too hurt, and you were too weak to tend,
And so your short but happy life has come to it’s quiet end.

There’s an empty space upon the shelf where your cage used to sit,
I try to place a treasure there, but nothing seems to fit.

I listen to the silence and I wait to hear your call,
But the quiet that I hear must be the worst sound of them all.

I need this hurt I feel to leave, but don’t know where to start,
Just promise that forever you will stay within my heart.

If you know someone with children who is experiencing pet loss, this web-site might help.

Too Much of a Good Thing?

I went out for coffee with friends this evening, and while I did have a great time, I am now wishing that I had made a different choice of beverage.  Because I now have two children to care for, I am reminded why it is a bad idea to drink coffee in the evening (as it is, I will be up all night feeding my daughter) Here it is 10:02, and both of my children are fast asleep.  I should be doing the same thing, but instead I am wide awake with no signs that sleep is imminent.  Still, considering that it was my first coffee of the day, it was almost worth it…

It’s funny how the late nights of my youth (when 3 a.m. wasn’t an unusual bedtime) have been replaced with evenings when 10:00 is a really late bedtime.  Perspectives sure change when we become parents.  Nothing prepares you for that, yet, nothing in the world would ever make you want to return to your life before having children.

So, I guess the next time I do a coffee night out with the girls, I will try to remember that perhaps an herbal tea, or milk steamer would be a more sensible choice.  After all, I am a Mom now, and doesn’t Mom know best?!? :-D

“Thankful”

Pumpkins with Shadows
I am thankful for so many things, but the following are among some of the most important to me. I will try to remember how blessed my life is this weekend, as we celebrate this wonderful time of the year.
Warm and caring friends and family who have surrounded me throughout my life, especially in recent tough times.
The wonderful selection of food we have, and plenty of it to nurture us at all times.
Our beautiful son, who I feel so blessed to have had, and our daughter-to-be who I cannot wait to meet, and their father Stuart, my best friend, who is such a kind and loving husband and dedicated father.
The beauty of nature, and the ability to enjoy it so close to home.
Moments shared with family, and the memories these create.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Mist in the Morning…

Mist

This is one of my favorite times of the day; first thing in the morning before anyone else is up. It is such a pretty scene out of our back window just now, as the mist rises up from behind the budding trees. The birds are singing, and there is such a sense of quiet peace. It really is beautiful.

Mornings like this, I really enjoy the sense of calm in our neighbourhood, and cannot imagine leaving here. But latley, we have been doing a lot of thinking about where we live, as student residents of nearby houses seem to encroach on quiet life on Koch Drive. Generally, the summers are good as far as students go, as most of them leave to return to their family homes for the summer. Most of the students we have encountered here on our street are quite respectful, keeping noise levels down, and being relatively non-disruptive, however, there were a few keg parties in the fall that were raided by local police, and written about extensively in the Guelph Mercury. The issue of garbage and shopping carts being left around also proves quite an eye-sore, not to mention a danger to the many children who live here also.

Our next door neighbours have decided to sell their house, and we are very sorry to see them go. I hope that we get good new neighbours, though I doubt anyone will compare to these friends. Many of us here sure will miss them…

A Busy Weekend…

Scrapbooking

This past Thursday, I hosted a Creative Memories Scrapbooking party! I don’t know about everyone else who attended, but I had a really great time :-) I think it was a combination of getting together with some friends that I hadn’t seen in a while, exchanging stories about our kids and our busy lives, as well as doing something just for me that I absolutely LOVE! Scrapbooking has been a passion of mine for many years now. It began when I went to a “Crop Night” with a co-worker of my husbands, just to see what this new craze was all about. That evening, I made my first official scrapbook page layout, featuring honeymoon snapshots from Nova Scotia. Since then, I have collected massive quantities of scrapbooking “stuff” especially stickers! Stuart thinks it is cute that I get to re-live my childhood by getting out my “sticker books” to play with once in a while. While I am not a compulsive hoarder of any one thing, I would have to say that my collection of stickers might make one wonder…

Friday, we left Guelph, and headed up North for an overnight stay with family in the Owen Sound area. I really enjoyed seeing both of my Grandmothers, Aunts and Uncles, and of course my parents, and my Brother, Michael. My Mom devised a fun way to hand out Easter treats this year. She made up a wonderful basket full of goodies, and we played a card game, and as each person was eliminated from the game, they got to choose a prize from the basket! Much more original than the traditional “hide the eggs” routine! I think I enjoyed it even more, as I got to choose a prize from the basket early on in the proceedings, and there was a lot of choice!

We arrived back in town this afternoon, having enjoyed a beautiful drive in the sunshine with our sleeping son in the back seat, which allowed us to chat while we drove.  We caught up on news, exchanged ideas, and just enjoyed each other’s company.
Tomorrow, it’s rest and relaxation here at our own home (throw in a bit of cooking of course, and perhaps some visitors…) I can’t think of a better way to spend Easter Weekend.

To top off a wonderful weekend, on Monday we have our first ultrasound.  This is early to be having an ultrasound, as they don’t normally do one until around 20 weeks, but we are still a little uncertain on the timing, and not *exactly* sure how old baby is.  In any case, I am really looking forward to getting a sneak peek at this new little person.  Things sure seem to be moving right along!

Cookies: The Food of Friendship

Cookies

After a quick excursion today, I arrived home tired and hungry. My mind was racing about the many things I hoped to accomplish today, as I knew inside vacuuming, dusting, meal preparations and many other tasks awaited me. From the window of my car, I could see that there was a note hanging on my front door. I wondered if the courier had come with notification of a parcel I needed to go and collect from the postal outlet, or if perhaps a neighbour had left something. As I opened the door, I took the note down, and found it was a booklet full of recipes for kids activities, and fun foods to intice fussy toddlers. Below the booklet, hanging from the door knob, was a wonderful little bag of cookies! I was delighted to find these treasures, and wondered who they were from…

I have since e-mailed the “clever cookie” who left this little surprise for me, to thank her for her thoughtful gesture of friendship! Isn’t it funny how small gestures can be the biggest and happiest highlight of your day?
