Spring Fever

Tulip

“Spring Has Sprung, the grass is ris…I wonder where the birdies is!?!”

I think my Mom used to recite this to me when I was little…even now, it still makes me smile!

On the topic of spring, my husband and I have noticed a huge change in our son’s behaviour of late, and are wondering if the cause is the proverbial “Spring Fever” which seems to affect us all at this time of the year. Yesterday was full of tantrums and shouting while he spent much of the day indoors. At one point, a broken banana which his Dad attempted to remedy with scotch tape (do not try this at home people!) was the cause of a level 9 toddler melt-down.

Today, our efforts to spend much of the day outside paid off as his spirits were so much better, and there wasn’t a single tantrum. He seemed to have a very happy day! It was so nice to have him back to his regular old self again. Nothing a little fresh air and sunshine couldn’t fix, eh!

Just what is there to the notion of spring fever anyways? Why exactly does it affect children (dare I say, everyone) in such a profound way? Parents and teachers note a yearly increase in the “Spring Crazies” second only to the sugur-induced madness seen on the days following Hallowe’en! Even animals are acting funny. Our cats are literally climbing the walls, and the Squirels are going nuts for…well…nuts!

Is it because children are so sensitive that they succumb to thier emotions so much more than we do as adults? Perhaps we are all in super-sensitivo mode? I know I for one am extremely sensitive when it comes to the weather. I notice a definite up-lift in my spirits whenever the sun shines. Perhaps all of us in this wacky climate are all so much more affected by the weather than we realise?

Pink Crocs

All I can say for certain is that I am truly thrilled to see the return of the grass, and although it is still brown in colour, I was briefly tempted to run out there in my sandals today. I did not end up wearing my sandals, however I did make an equally poor choice of footwear on our earlier walk to the muddy park. “Holy shoes Batman!” Literally…hole-y…heh! Needless to say, I got just a wee bit of a soaker!

Best $7 I’ve Spent in a While!

Lion & Lamb

It is snowing like the blazes out there! I don’t really know where that expression comes from but it seems appropriate somehow. What a strange winter this has been. One day of beautiful sun, and seemingly warm temperatures followed by a day of blizzard-like conditions. I guess this shouldn’t surprise most Canadians. I told Liam today “it looks like the North Pole out there” One could honestly make that mistake looking out my window right now! For starters, I’m not entirely certain that the deck is still there, given the tremendous gusts of wind we keep hearing, but assuming that it is, there will be some serious shovelling to do in the morning.

Speaking of which, as we were in the midst of Real Estate negotiations this evening (about which I will write at a later time, but in a nutshell, let me just say *YAY..it looks like it’s been sold!*) Anyhow, our doorbell rang, and when we opened the door, there stood two of the neighbourhood kids, asking if they could shovel our driveway. Of course, we took them up on their offer, and for the mere $7 I had in my wallet and a couple of cups of cocoa to “go-go” they did a bang-up job!

I guess you could say that March has come in like a lion…which as legend has it, means it will go out like a lamb. I hope this proves true. It has been a long winter, and so many of us are ready for the spring. But until the grass makes it’s happy spring debut once more, at least I know that there are some eager entrepreneurial shovellers just down the street looking for business!

Weather Worries…

Although most of us have been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather of late, we all know deep down that this sort of unusual weather is a trend that we are seeing more and more of, and frankly, should be very concerned about.

I remember back in the nineties, there was a huge trend of “eco-friendly” everything. Role models such as David Suzuki told us that our planet was in big trouble, and many of us actually listened. As a rather rebellious teen-ager, I took it upon myself to do as many earth-friendly things as I could back then. I joined “Peaceful and Ecological Minds” our high school environmentalists group where I got informed and began taking action by educating others. I became a vegetarian, a lifestyle change that I maintained for many years. I became very aware of animal testing for consumer products, and boycotted as many of these products as I possibly could. I made homemade household cleaners, my own soap, and made sure all laundry in our home was hung to dry. I even researched what I could about water usage reduction, and I took short showers, never ever let faucets run unnecessarily, and installed a water-saver in our toilet! Wow - so much change for a young person.

I am embarassed to say however, that I have dropped almost all of these changes from my home as an adult. I don’t think it is anything more than the simple fact that I “forgot” to maintain them. Perhaps we all need a refersher course in the small changes we can make to make big differences globally?

When I logged onto Yahoo this morning, I noticed the “Yahoo Answers” forum, and decided to check it out (seeing as I had the time because my children and husband were all still asleep)

I wanted to share some of the advice given to the question “What do you think it will take to reverse the effects of global climate change?”

If you have a few minutes, click here for some good advice on this topic. I didn’t realise that some of the things we already do in this household could have such an important affect on our earth. I feel inspired to do more again. I know we can do it, and it isn’t really all that hard. It really comes down to reversing some of the bad habits we have slipped back into, and re-learning how to do things in an earth-friendly way.

Fellow blogger Katherine Seibert also has many useful tips and articles about Environmentally friendly alternatives and Globally sensitive issues on her blog at Edeva. Check it out! She recently informed me of a company called Norwex, who produce earth friendly alternative products. Let’s all try as hard as we can for some positive change! We owe it to ourselves and to our children to be respnsible Stewards of our planet.

Winds of Change

Walking
This picture was taken a few days ago before the cold tempertures and snow came and shocked us all into a state of denial and disbelief that winter had arrived. Indeed, in the upcoming forecast, they are calling for colder temperatures and slightly more winter-like conditions. Last night, Stuart said to me that we got “cheated” out of fall. I tend to agree. This season is so short to begin with, and due to the high winds we’ve experienced in the past 48 hours, most of the beautiful colour has left the trees surrounding us.
This winter will be a very different one. I will be the mother of two children. Double the responsibility, twice as many diapers, feedings, and twice the toys that now clutter my home. Yet at the same time, double the joy in my life.
There is an expression “go where the wind takes you.” I am excited to see exactly what that place looks like.

Enough Blue Sky…

Cloudy
I remember my Mom once telling me that her Grandmother used to say “if there’s enough blue sky to make a man’s shirt, it will be a nice day.” I love hearing the favorite expressions used by our elders, and indeed, I think this one does have some truth to it.
Liam and I went for a walk yesterday afternoon, under cloudy skies that had “just enough” blue. It was a wonderful walk despite a minor meltdown caused by Liam’s indecisiveness as to whether to keep walking, or go back to the park. Never-the-less, we enjoyed our stroll, camera in hand and I took several pictures along the way.
Walking with a toddler forces you to slow down (something many of us need to do more of) It makes you more aware of your environment, and the things in it which normally, you may take for granted or simply not even notice.
In these final days of calm before our second child arrives, I want to remember to notice the small things. I want to remember what it was like to be the mother of just one child. I want to focus on Liam as much as possible, play with him more, read more stories and cuddle him endlessly.
I want to slow down, and simply remember…

Puddle Jumping

Easter Weekend Easter Weekend

Another beautiful spring day today, so we took advantage of the wonderful weather and got outdoors to take care of this and that around the yard. I have realised since owning a house that they are a ton of work, but keeping up with the gardening brings me a lot of joy, and I truly enjoy spending a lot of my time outdoors.

Easter Weekend

I moved a lot of lillies around to the side of the house from the back garden while Stuart, and my Mother and Brother-in-Law took Liam to the park to play. When they arrived home, Liam enjoyed splashing about in some puddles in front of the house.

The garden is starting to sprout, and already we have many lillies growing, and the tulips and daffodils are almost ready to bloom! I love spring, the new beginnings it brings to nature and the joy my garden brings to my life.

Weather Vanes?

Weather Vane Weather Vane

As we set off for a walk the other day, I heard a loud and familiar sound coming from above our heads. I looked up to see two Canada Geese perched high up on our rooftop, honking loudly to alert us to their presence. The pair sat there for quite some time. Perhaps they were enjoying the view!

On the same day, we took Liam out on another walk in his wagon…since then, every time we’re in the garage he heads straight for it, and attempts to clamber in. I think he is trying to tell me something!

Spring Clean-Up

Springtime!

Finally, yesterday we had some beautiful spring-like weather. I am still eagerly awaiting a “Robin-sighting” but if it wasn’t spring yesterday, you could have fooled me!

Springtime!

We got outside with Liam for a nice long walk, and when we got home, he enjoyed some playtime out in our backyard. Because he wasn’t really walking last fall, this was the first time we got to experience our child “playing” in our yard. It was so wonderful to see him playing on the grass with a ball, and later, carrying around the broom I had been using to sweep off the deck. He watched as an airplane soared above our heads, and was also delighted to see our neighbour’s children playing on the swings next door.

Springtime!

So many firsts happen with children, and all of them are special. This “first” is one of my favorites, and one that I will remember for many years to come!

Robin in the Rain

Robin

Backing onto Conservation Land, it is not uncommon to see Deer, Opossums, Rabbits, Groundhogs, and varying species of songbirds from the upstairs windows of our house. Being an animal lover, I find this feature of our property just great! One day last fall, as my husband and I went for a walk along the parks trails, we suddenly came upon a Doe. She was just standing there, eating quietly from a nearby bush, and didn’t seem particularily concerned with our presence. I think out of the three of us, she was the least shocked!

This morning, I awoke to the familiar sound of singing birds. I recognized the song of a Cardinal, a Chick-a-dee, and a chorus of little Sparrows and Finches. I also heard the twittering of our two Budgies “Toby” and “Ki-Ki,” who were likely singing back to the outdoor birds they can see from their cages. One song I heard from the outdoor birds had a familiar, yet somehow mysterious sound to it. I wondered if it could possibly be a robin? It is afterall, raining very hard…and Robins like rain!!! Spring is supposed to be here soon…could it be?

Today, I will be on the look-out for the Robin I hope I heard early this morning. They say into every life, a little rain must fall, and I sure don’t mind if it is accompanied by Robins, nature’s symbol of the beginning of spring!

It seems as though today, we are having our very own “mini-ice-storm” right here in Guelph! I took this picture out of our back window a few minutes ago (hoping to catch the perfectly timed lightening shot) but of course, that’s just way too much to expect really. :-) Given that there is any lightening at all, I probably should not be on the computer right now, but if you’re reading this, you can rest assured that all’s well! The trees sure are pretty, although I hate to think of the damage the heavy ice is causing the branches of the cedar trees just outside our window.

My parents recently endured a very bad ice storm in the Wiarton area. They live on the edge of a small lake and the property is right in the forest, so the damage is all around them. In a conversation with my Mom earlier today, she was telling me that their property was particularily hard hit. This became obvious after a large branch fell on their car, smashing the back window, coupled by the fact that they were without power for several days last week. There are many downed trees all over their property as well.

I was very sad to learn of the devistation at Owen Sound’s Harrison Park, a favorite and familiar landmark in my hometown. The park is known for its beautiful old trees, walking and skiing trails, and a waterfowl park. I have heard that many of the park’s trees sustained a lot of damage due to the ice. Hopefully, enough of them survived to provide shady picnic spots, and shelter to the hundreds of birds and squirrels the park is home to.

As Canadians, I think we often blame ourselves for fixating on the weather. We laugh at ourselves for never being content with the current temperature, or how much or how little sun we are getting at the time. At any given moment, the weather seems to be the topic of conversation between the closest of friends and complete strangers alike. But in a country where we can literally have high temperatures and humidity followed by a snow day, is it any wonder that we discuss it so much?

To make a short story…well…long, I wanted to say that this is just the kind of day where we need comfort food! Tonight for dinner, I made an easy stand-by meal that is comforting soul food.
